Damien Looks to a Bright Future

Damien at Nationals

photo1It’s been about a week since the Speech and Debate National Tournament and the team has returned battle scarred, but hopefully wiser and more mature. Among a field of 4,000 high school participants from schools across the nation and world (the tournament included contestants from Taiwan and South Korea), the Damien team did well. The policy debate team of Ian Bento and Matteo Muehlhauser were bumped out debating against extremely competitive teams in preliminaries, but kept true to their foundation of logic and oratorical skill in the face of dizzying abstractions and almost incomprehensible rates of delivery.  Congress debater Ronnie Vacca-Farley was able to preside over a session of the House and earned a gavel to take home to Hawaii. In the speech rounds the Damien representatives took to the stage again. Ronnie was the only storyteller from Hawaii to advance after a harsh one round elimination process. In the category of Impromptu speaking, Matteo fought his way through each round (each elimination round only advanced the top 1/3). However, one round shy of semi finals … Matteo’s run at nationals came to an end. I think the team did well … And the competition they faced were impressive. We are now preparing for another year and another bid to Nationals. Thank you all for your support this year.
