Being a senior has its privileges...a senior at Damien Memorial School, that is…
At the beginning of the school year, the senior class submitted proposals to administration to be able to participate in certain events and activities and to obtain certain privileges throughout the school year. Some were approved, some were not.
One proposal that was approved was to organize a luau just for seniors and it came to fruition on May 21 at the Hale Kealoha Restaurant in Kailua. The setting was laid-back local cool with a touch of Gilligan’s Island kitsch, so how could one not have fun in such a place? “The luau seemed to go well,” reported DMS counselor, Hyon Fournier. “And hopefully the students enjoyed themselves.”
The students played games and were served classic luau dishes including kalua pork, chicken long rice, squid luau, and lomi lomi salmon. The musical group Kawaihone donated their time to entertain the seniors and were “awesome,” reported Ms. Fournier.
While the luau was for students only, there were a few members of the faculty/administration at the event like Ms. Fournier. Other “chaperones” included Principal, Br. Daniel Casey, Vice-Principal, Mr. Lewis and Director of Guidance, Mr. Asuncion.
Overall, the luau that was proposed eight months earlier was a success. Some of the other approved senior class proposals throughout the year included parking lot duty, the Matson beach clean-up, dress-down during the last month of school, and ordering food delivery on Fridays for lunch. Ms. Fournier said that some of the money the school earned from the Matson beach clean-up helped fund the luau.
Mahalo to the chaperones and the following members of the senior committee who helped organize the luau: Kim Aguada, Melany Batad, Heavenly Gabriel, Storm Maldonado, Justin Paeste, Dominic Sousa, and Ghenniel Vegas!
