Kalaupapa Immersion Trip

In October 2015 and 2016, Damien Memorial seniors and their adult chaperones took part in unforgettable “immersion trips” to Kalaupapa on Molokai. They learned about Kalaupapa’s rich history and the ministry of Saints Damien and Marianne Cope, and met community members affected by Hansen’s Disease. Participants celebrated Mass with the residents, cleaned Saint Philomena Church, tended to Saint Damien’s gravesite and toured the Franciscan women’s convent where Saint Marianne Cope and religious sisters cared for residents. Participants also visited the Kalaupapa National Historic Park museum and hiked the Pali Trail along some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world.
