The competitive year for the Speech & Debate team has officially begun! After a great showing at the first Speech tournament the debaters stepped things up at the first Debate tournament at Roosevelt High School. Donning their suits and professional attire in the sweltering humidity and imminent rain this past Saturday (Halloween) JV debaters Connie Huang, Nicole Hirao, Nicholas Kauffman and 8th grader Thomas Allen got their feet wet representing Damien in Policy Debate. Policy Debate is considered one of the most difficult competitive styles of debate - and Damien is one of the only schools in the Hawaii Speech League that has consistently had Middle School debaters test their mettle against High School competitors. The Varsity Debate team of Mikayla Min, Tuiletuli Fua, Ian Bento, Dominic Boland, and Emanuele Muehlhauser had a great performance - with Ian and Dominic being recognized for having one of the two best records at the tournament and the Varsity members only having a combined loss of one round. The next tournament the team will compete in will be a two-day State Qualifying Invitational that will also host competitors from mainland and international schools at Kamehameha Schools during the Thanksgiving Break.
