Monarchs fall short in opening round

Konawaena defeated Damien, 42-33, in the opening round of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Football State Championships on Saturday night at Julian R. Yates Field.

Damien trailed 33-6 at halftime, but rallied to outscore the Wildcats, 27-9 in the second half. "It shows the character of our boys. We talked to them at halftime about our mistakes and we give credit to Konawaena. Also credit our boys in the second half and we told them get one stop and we'll be in it. We came up short in the end, but can't be any prouder of our guys this season," said Damien coach Eddie Klaneski.

Monarchs end their season at 6-2 overall.
