Dig Pink: A 10th Grader's Mission to Serve Damien's Community

This October, Damien Memorial School is joining the fight against metastatic breast cancer and it's all thanks to the heart and initiative of one student living out the legacy of St. Damien in a very real way.

Sophomore Sabrina Alejo is leading Damien's Dig Pink campaign, a nationwide movement that uses the power of volleyball to fund breast cancer research. For Alejo, this cause is personal. Her time volunteering at a local cancer clinic opened her eyes to the profound impact cancer has on patients and their families, and to just how much community and support matter during the fight.

"I am proud to say that Dig Pink is my way of taking that perspective and turning it into an action to help those affected," Alejo shared.

The funds raised through Dig Pink go directly toward breast cancer research; research that helps women with metastatic breast cancer receive treatment tailored to their own bodies, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Alejo chose to bring this campaign to Damien because she knows exactly what kind of school this is.

"I wanted to share this with the Damien community because I know that our school is rooted in service and community," she said.

"The teachers, staff, and my classmates have always taught me the importance of taking care of one another and serving those in need."

She believes that together, as a school family, Damien can make a real impact for those fighting metastatic breast cancer.

Saint Damien dedicated his life to caring for the sick and forgotten because he believed no one battling illness should have to face it alone.

In her own way, Alejo is carrying that same spirit forward, turning empathy into action for women fighting metastatic breast cancer.
