Alumni Spotlight: From Monarch to Medicine: Dr. Neilsen Gazo ’18
We’re proud to share an exciting update from Dr. Neilsen Gazo, Class of 2018, whose journey from Damien Memorial School has led him into the world of medicine.
After graduating from Damien, Dr. Gazo pursued his passion for pharmacy at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
His dedication and drive eventually took him from Hawaiʻi to Washington State, where he is now completing a residency as he works toward his goal of becoming a clinical critical care pharmacist.
Reflecting on his time at Damien, Dr. Gazo credits the school with helping lay the foundation for his path into medicine.
“Damien helped pave the road for my college journey and my path into medicine by instilling in me essential values of passion, resilience, and responsibility.”
He also shared how the support of faculty and staff made a lasting impact. “My teachers, coaches, and counselors played a massive role in pushing me to step outside of my comfort zone and break out of my shell.”
Among his favorite memories is time spent in the classroom with teachers who left a lasting impression. “To this day, I still remember my time in Mr. Higa’s AP Literature class and the many fun and meaningful moments we shared.”
As a newly minted doctor, Dr. Gazo’s journey is a powerful reminder of how the Damien community continues to shape leaders committed to service, growth, and excellence. We congratulate him on this incredible milestone and look forward to seeing where his calling in healthcare leads next.
