Damien Memorial School Students Explore ʻIolani Palace
Submitted by Kumu Partner Akiona
To close out the third quarter, Kumu Partner Akiona and his Hawaiian History class had the privilege to tour Iolani Palace, which was made possible through an donation made to the Friends of Iolani Palace.
At this point in the year for our Hawaiian History class, the sophomores have learned about the Kalākaua Dynasty, Queen Liliʻuokalani, and the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom Government.
Having the chance to enters a time capsule of Hawaiian History serves as a tangible learning experience that our students will not forget.
Along with touring the palace, they completed a walking tour of the grounds. In addition to that, students visited and paid their respects at the Saint Damien and Queen Liliʻuokalani statues. A special treat that was awarded to the second group of sophomores was the chance to visit Governor Josh Green's ceremonial office.
This was a great learning opportunity for our sophomores and we look forward to more opportunities like this for all of our students in the future.
