Small Bags, Big Impact: How One Class Reminded Us What Damien Is All About
Mrs. Carino’s class after finishing their Blessing Bags project last December 2025.
As we wrap up the 2025–2026 school year, we're taking a moment to look back at some of the stories that made this year unforgettable. This is one of our favorites.
Before heading home for Christmas break, the students of Mrs. Judith Carino's English 9 Honors class (Period 1A) in Room 316 put down their literature and picked up something equally powerful: compassion in action. Their Homeless Blessing Bags project — a student-led initiative to provide care packages to neighbors experiencing homelessness — was a powerful reminder that Damien students don't just learn about leadership.
They live it.
Leaders Who Look Outward
It would have been easy to coast into the holiday break focused on rest and celebration. Instead, these 9th graders chose to think about others. That instinct to look outward, to ask how can I help? is exactly the kind of character Damien works to cultivate in every student. Mrs. Carino's class didn't wait for someone else to address homelessness in their community. They saw a need, rolled up their sleeves, and did something about it.
What's a Blessing Bag?
A Blessing Bag is a gallon-sized Ziploc bag packed with essentials and heart. Each bag included:
Hygiene essentials: toothpaste, soap, deodorant, and hand sanitizer
Nutrition: granola bars, crackers, beef jerky, and bottled water
Comfort items: new socks, rain ponchos, and Band-Aids
A personal touch: a handwritten note of encouragement written by the student who packed it
As Mrs. Carino shared, "These kits were a way to meet immediate needs and show compassion. It was about acknowledging someone's humanity with a simple gift."
Community Starts at Home
The supplies were donated by students and their own families, making this a project that extended well beyond Room 316. Once assembled, students took the bags home to keep in their family vehicles, ready to hand out whenever they encountered someone in need over the holidays.
Rather than a single drop-off, every student became a personal point of connection in their community. They weren't waiting for a formal volunteer event or an organized drive. They were simply ready and willing to show up for a stranger.
That's leadership.
The Damien Difference
As we reflect on this school year, stories like this one stand out, not because they made headlines, but because they happened quietly, driven entirely by the hearts of our students. This is what a year at Damien looks like. Not just textbooks and tests, but young people choosing to lead with empathy, serve with intention, and carry their values with them wherever they go.
These 9th graders learned that you don't need a title or a platform to make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a Ziploc bag and a kind word.
To Mrs. Carino, thank you for creating a classroom where literature meets life and where students are inspired to lead with their hearts.
To the families who donated supplies and supported this effort, your generosity made it possible.
And to the students of English 9 Honors, Period 1A: you made your school proud, and your community a little brighter this holiday season.
This is the Damien spirit. This is aloha. 🤙
Stay tuned as we continue looking back at the moments, people, and stories that defined the 2024–2025 school year.
